What Is Frame Geometry?

A bicycle frame is probably the most vital part of a bicycle, to which all other parts and wheels are then fitted. The most popular and widely used frame design for a touring bicycle is called the tandem frame, and consists of two parallel triangles: a front triangle and a matched back triangle. This is also called the single-triangle frame. A double-triangle frame has one rear triangle that overlaps the other. In a triple-triangle frame, the right and left triangles overlap each other, but not the other way around.

A modern carbon fiber bicycle frame offers lightweight comfort and maximum stiffness, thanks to its hollow carbon fiber structure. However, it is not enough to have a light weight and long stiffness. The front triangle must also be as aerodynamic as possible, in order to avoid a drag on the front wheel. The best frames designs include a deep seat tube and a smooth fork, as well as deep carbon fiber on the outer part of the frame, to reduce weight and improve stiffness.

On a typical bicycle frame, the pedals push the front wheels and the crank through the cassette. The crank arm is attached to the frame by a cage or by a set of bent over rings. The seat tube and the chain stay in contact with each other through a seat tube and sprocket system. In between these, there is usually a small area where the rear wheel and the chain link, or a combination of the two.

Steel frames are preferred when comparing with aluminum frames. Steel is usually preferred because of its ability to conduct heat, as well as its strength. Other frame materials are more resistant to corrosion than steel, but are more costly.

However, when it comes to deciding which type of frame is best for you, consider the pros and cons of both. A straight tube will give you the most stable ride, as well as greater stiffness. However, you may not be able to change direction as quickly as you would like when using a curved seat tube. For this reason, a combination of the two frame materials is generally preferred.
