How to Choose a Carbon Fiber Bike Frame

Carbon fiber is a very strong and flexible material often considered to be 'carbon nano-tube'. It is created by applying carbon to another material which is hollow, thus the name. Carbon fiber itself is a very tough, lightweight, and durable material that has been frequently used in everything from motorcycle parts to space shuttles. Carbon fiber is also valued for its ability to be stiff and strong, which makes it very ideal for a variety of other products and particularly useful for bike frames. The physical performance advantages are also quite pronounced when it comes to increased stiffness and comfort of this material. The material is also able to provide greater strength-to-weight ratio than steel and aluminum.

To make a new carbon fiber bike frame, companies have developed special machines called simulators that allow them to simulate real world crash tests. These crash test simulations help engineers determine the design of the new carbon frames. They will typically start with a top tube profile that is one or two inches lower than what most bike builders use. The purpose is to minimize flexing and deformation of the new carbon frames while still maintaining the rigidity and durability desired of a carbon fiber bike frame.

Next, the angles of the frames are carefully analyzed to achieve both stiffness and strength. This is where the company takes their time and finesse to ensure each curve on the new carbon fiber bike frame is carefully balanced. The new framework will then be "disassembled" to get at all the internal tubes and the reinforcing ring on the front of the frame. The newly designed frame will then be welded together to produce a new carbon fiber bike frame. In order to allow the new frame to last, a number of steps are taken to keep it properly supported, such as welding on corrosion-resistant steel connection pins. The new carbon fiber bike frames are then painted with high-quality polyurethane finishes in order to provide optimum protection from the elements.

When it comes to strength, the long run is usually much stronger than the short run of any given carbon fiber bike frame. The reason for this is because the longer run frame is not susceptible to bending as easily under load. This also allows for better stiffness throughout the ride. On the average, a long run carbon fiber bike frame will be three times as stiff as a short-run model. The stiffness/stiffness ratio will be different depending on the intended use of the bike, but it is safe to say that a long run frame will offer the ideal stiffness for serious cyclists.

When it comes time to buy a new carbon fiber bike, there are several factors that should be considered. Price is obviously important, but you should also consider how efficient the bike is for its price. If you intend to purchase a cheap, entry-level carbon fiber bike, then you will probably want to avoid the more expensive top of the line models. These bikes are usually made of inferior materials and will not last long. You can expect to spend roughly the same amount of money on either a carbon road bike or a mountain bike, so you will not lose anything by shopping around.

Strength and stiffness are two major features to look for when purchasing a new bike. If you want a strong bike that can take a lot of abuse, then you will likely want to choose one with a steel or aluminum frame. These materials are typically more durable and stiffer, which means that they will last longer without the need for much maintenance. In terms of price, these two frames are usually about the same in price. However, the long-run strength of a carbon fiber bike may be worth the extra money compared to a cheap aluminum model.
