A groupset, also known as gruppo or group bicycle part, is the organized collection of individual bicycle parts together. It normally refers to the entire parts that comprise a complete bicycle excluding the bicycle frame, wheel, fork, handlebars, pedals, and other rider input points, including the saddle, grips, and levers. Today, groupset sales can be found in a wide range of bike models and makes, starting from very simple ones to the very complex.

Although groupsets first originated in Italy with the groupset bikes developed for racing and touring, they have now found their way into many different kinds of bicycles. Common types of groupset are the geared ones, which are typically found on road bikes. These groupset groups have one or more gears such as front and rear gears. Other groupsets, such as the demure groupset for women, have single or dual gears and levers.

A big advantage of using a groupset is its simplified design. In other words, the number of components is reduced, which translates into simplified drivetrain configurations and simpler installation. Another advantage is that the simplified drivetrain reduces the total weight of the bike, particularly the weight of the drivetrain. For instance, a chain-driven groupset usually weighs between thirty and forty kilograms. By contrast, a conventional drivetrain system adds between fifty and sixty kilograms to the total weight of the bicycle.

The most common groupset today are made from steel or aluminum. Steel drives the big ring and the freewheel. The advantage of an aluminum system is that it is lighter and it does not require any type of special cleaning, since it is just an alloy. However, it tends to rust easily, so regular oiling is required to keep it in good shape.

One popular option in the market today is the Dura-ace Di2 groupset. The Di2 groupset is made from three different materials: the front is aluminum and the rear is carbon fibre. It has a sealed gear ratio, meaning that more of the power is generated between the chain and the cassette. This leads to a reduced need for shifting. The group uses a patented quick shift system that allows up to four different patterns of shifting.

Other options available in the market include the SRAM dura-ace groupset and the Shimano Ultegra groupset. Both of these groupset series use Ultegra brakes. A Ultegra bike is probably the best all-round choice for a beginner in road racing, thanks to its stiffness, high torque clutch and excellent geometry.
